Sandhill Crane Trip! Participants wanted!

I’m planning a trip to view the Sandhill cranes as they make their spring migration north.

The sandhill crane migration north is a spectacular site to behold as they congregate in the shallow waters of the Platt River in Nebraska.

To observe the cranes, the Rowe Sanctuary (http://www.rowesanctuary.org/index.html)

has a crane observation program.  They have set up blinds along the river.  They put together groups and take them out to the blinds in the wee hours of the morning for viewing.  This is a pretty good trip for persons of limited mobility as they even have golf carts to transport

I have set up a trip on April 8th to view the cranes and am looking for participants who would like to go and see the cranes.  As its an early morning program, we will leave on April 7th, stop off at Omaha at the Henry Doorly Zoo on the way out, spend the night in a motel in Nebraska, view the cranes in the morning, and return home the same day.

Costs of the trip are estimated at $60 per person to cover transportation and admission to the zoo and Rowe Sanctuary.  Lodging and meals would be extra.

If you are interested in making the trip, please contact our conservation office or call me at 641-390-0878.

Winter News

Are you on facebook?  We have recently expanded into the social networking age.  Resisting for quite some time didn’t make sense anymore as so many people are on facebook, that you are loosing a chance to communicate with them and thus loose contact with the public you serve.  I don’t post every little stray thought that crosses my mind (and don’t really understand why some people do???) and I guess the games that are played don’t interest me either, perhaps it’s a part of not having much free time to spend in those activities.  But, I do like to post what I’ve been doing as part of the naturalist program and other interesting tidbits on my own page, and now I’ve started doing them on the county page.

As my friend list grows I get more and more work related questions from people via the messaging.  That is fine and it’s a good way to respond to the public in an efficient manner.

Personally I guess the best part of the facebook experience is being able to share a video of something we’ve done, and give people a chance to  comment on the video.

So, look for us by a simple search of Worth County Conservation Board.  You may find two sites.   I do have two different sites running, each is a little different in its usage, but I will likely shut down the less used one in the future.  The one I’m using the most has a butterfly milkweed flower in the main picture.

Trout

We have lost our supplier of trout to the presence of a disease organism.  We have looked for a new supplier, but have not yet found anybody who can provide what we need.  Thus we may no longer have a winter trout stocking program in the future.

Pheasants Forever

The Northern Prairie Pheasants Forever Banquet will be held April 2 this year.  Banquet planning is well underway and we hope to have another good one.  Funding from the banquet supports a lot of different conservation programs in the county.

Appleseed Shoot

We are going to host an appleseed shoot this next year.  Its quite a few months down the road, but worth thinking about now to get you interested in attending.

I’ve told the appleseed story here before, but suffice to say it’s a rifle marksman ship class the likes of which you can get nowhere else these days.  Think you are a good shot?  Are you a rifleman?  Can you really shoot a rifle with any accuracy?  Come and find out.

You don’t need much in the way of equipment, any .22 rifle will work though some sort of magazine fed version would be best.  In the shooting, you are frequently firing 5 or 10 shots in rapid succession, and though possible to reload other types of actions, the ability to have a couple of loaded magazines handy to insert into the gun on demand is very useful.  The everpresent Ruger 10/22 is perhaps the most popular choice available.  Sights can be anything you want, open, scope, or peep.  If your eyesight is week, a scope makes a lot of sense.  The only other thing of vital importance is the ability to place a sling on the rifle.  Not just any sling, but a WEB sling the likes of which the expert riflemen have been using for years.
