02/07/2006--New-Naturalist Videos! Got video? We do! In one of our more recent forays
into the wild, we were investigating what was going on beneath the ice. Ice
fishing is always interesting--seems like you either really get them, or come
home with a limit of ice (as the old joke goes).
We took the
video camera and aqua view camera and connected them together. The result is
that we were able to go down into the water, see what’s there, and record it.
The water at
Kuennens quarry is remarkably clear--perhaps up to 15 or 20 feet of visibility.
The oxygen level was also tested and we had good high levels.
Dropping the
camera through the water, we saw fish on our very first look. Several blue gill
were at the bottom amongst the aquatic vegetation (I almost said weeds).
That turned
out to be about the only time we saw fish. We drilled quite a few holes and
looked in many spots but it was clear that the fish were somewhere we were not.
We never did
see any of our trout. According to the ice fishermen, the trout don’t stay in
one place, but rather swim around continuously, often right beneath the ice or
in the very shallow water.
So, to take a
look at what’s down there, log on
to our new web site for a video beneath the ice!
